Speculation as to the function of the latter has ranged from
thermal insulation to reduction of micro-turbulence in airflow
along the fuselage during flight operations. Unfortunately, the
latter hypothesis has had to be discarded---we are informed by
a Learned Source that there is no such thing as micro-turbulence,
at least not in air at the speed of flight of a butterfly. New
hypotheses therefore gratefully accepted.
